The Giants covered the XLVI Super Bowl betting lines with a 21-17 win as three point dogs as the game never came close to going over the wild posted total of 53.
From the start of the game there was a strong sense that the Giants were the more solid and complete team. They ran the ball effectively and their defense contained New England quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots prolific passing attack. New England’s lack of a breakaway receiver was also a big factor as they had no one on the team who could match the heroics of Mario Manningham of the Giants, who made a catch for the ages that sparked the Giants game winning final drive to victory as he was double teamed and walking the tightrope of the sideline as he held on to Eli Manning’s perfectly placed pass. The running of Ahmad Bradshaw was a major factor in the Giants win as his 17 carries for 74 yards exposed the Patriots weak rush defense. All together the Giants dominated the play as they had a 37:05 mark in time of possession moving the ball consistently and at will throughout the game.
It was a sweet second Super Bowl title for Giants coach Tom Coughlin as he went from zero to hero after sitting in a blistering hot seat in December when a 4-game losing streak dropped his team to 6-6 and with the look of an also ran. Coughlin now matches his mentor Bill Parcels in Super Bowl wins while New England coach Bill Belichick suffered his second consecutive heartbreaking loss on Super Sunday to Coughlin and the Giants in the final moments.
Manning is now King of New York, if not the world itself, and known as the best clutch quarterback in all of football.
